YouTube Analytics in YouTube Studio has 7 main tabs — each answers a different question about your channel's performance. Some tabs are available at the channel level only; others at both channel and video level. Understanding what each tab measures turns data into decisions.
| Tab | The question it answers | Available at |
|---|---|---|
| Overview | What is the overall performance of the channel or video? | Channel + Video |
| Content | What content is the audience engaging with and how do they find it? | Channel only |
| Reach | How did the audience find your content? | Channel + Video |
| Engagement | How does the audience interact with your content? | Channel + Video |
| Audience | Who is watching your videos? | Channel + Video |
| Revenue | How are earnings distributed? (YPP only) | Channel + Video |
| Trends | What is your audience searching for? | Channel only |
Key takeaways:
- Per the Content tab page, the Content tab is available at the channel level only — not at the individual video level.
- Per the official page, YouTube distinguishes three viewer types: New (first view), Casual (watched at least monthly for 1–5 months in the past year), Regular (watched at least monthly for 6+ months in the past year).
- Per the official page, Unique viewers ≠ Views: if 3 people watch together on one TV = 1 view + 3 unique viewers. Unique viewers can exceed Views in some scenarios.
- Per the Advanced Mode page, special pre-built reports include: first 24 hours performance, age and gender breakdown, retention rate, and real-time performance.
- Per the official page, the Overview tab includes a Realtime report (last 48 hours or 60 minutes) and a Typical performance comparison that explains why views are above or below the channel's usual level.
Overview tab — the first and most immediate view
Per the official page, the Overview tab shows:
- Key metrics: Views, watch time, subscribers, and estimated revenue (YPP members).
- Typical performance: A comparison to the channel's historical baseline — with explanations for why views may be higher or lower than usual.
- Top content in period: Content ranked by views in the last 28 days.
- Realtime: Performance over the last 48 hours or last 60 minutes — most useful immediately after publishing new content.
- Top remixed: Your content that has been used by others to create Shorts, including remix count and remix views.
Content tab — channel level only
Per the official page, the Content tab is available at the channel level only and can be filtered by: Videos, Shorts, Live, Posts, Playlists, Podcasts.
Key reports within it:
- Impressions and how they led to watch time: The full funnel from impressions → CTR → views → watch time. For details: CTR improvement guide.
- How viewers found your content: Traffic source breakdown (YouTube search, Browse features, Suggested videos, External). Reveals the search terms viewers use to reach your content.
- Audience retention graph: The retention curve with the four moment types (Intro, Top moments, Spikes, Dips). For details: audience retention guide.
- Viewers across formats: Overlap of viewers consuming your content in different formats (Videos, Shorts, Live).
Reach tab — how your audience finds you
Per the official page, the Reach tab shows:
- Key metrics: Impressions, CTR, Views, Unique viewers.
- Traffic source types: Where viewers came from (YouTube search, Browse features, Suggested videos, External, Channel pages).
- Search terms: The specific words viewers typed to find the video — the most direct keyword intelligence available per the official pages.
Engagement tab — how the audience interacts
Per the official page, the Engagement tab shows:
- Watch time (hours): Total minutes watched. For details: watch time guide.
- Average view duration: The average time each viewer spends in the video.
- For Shorts: Also includes "Engaged views" — the specific Shorts metric used for RPM calculation.
- Audience retention: At the video level — the retention curve and key moments.
- Likes vs. dislikes.
- End screen element click rate: Click rate per end screen element — available at the video level only.
Audience tab — who is watching
Per the official page, the Audience tab classifies viewers into three officially documented categories:
- New viewers: Watched the channel for the first time in the selected period.
- Casual viewers: Watched the channel at least once per month for 1–5 months in the past year.
- Regular viewers: Watched the channel at least once per month for 6 or more months in the past year.
The "Videos growing your audience" report shows which content attracts new viewers, based on data from the last 90 days.
Important distinction: per the official page, Unique viewers ≠ Views. If 3 people watch a video together on one TV, it counts as 1 view but increases the unique viewer count by 3. This means unique viewers may exceed total views in scenarios involving shared viewing on TV screens.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the Revenue tab not showing in my Analytics?
Per the official page, the Revenue tab is only available to YouTube Partner Program members. If your channel is not in YPP, the tab does not appear. After joining YPP, it may take some time before the tab becomes visible and populates with data.
How do I find which search terms bring viewers to my videos?
Per the official page: YouTube Studio → Analytics → Content tab → Reach reports → Traffic source: YouTube search. This shows the specific search queries that led viewers to your content. The Research tab in Analytics also shows what your audience searches for on YouTube more broadly.
Are Analytics data updated in real time?
Per the official page, the Realtime report shows data from the last 48 hours or last 60 minutes. Other reports typically take 24–48 hours to process. The Audience retention report specifically takes 1–2 days to process and requires at least 100 views before it appears.
Can I access full YouTube Analytics from the mobile app?
Per the official page, some reports are not available on mobile devices. Core metrics are accessible via the YouTube Studio mobile app, but Advanced Mode and many detailed reports require a desktop browser for full access. The Realtime view and basic overview metrics are typically accessible on mobile.
What does the "first 24 hours" special report in Advanced Mode show?
Per the official page, the first 24 hours special report in Advanced Mode shows video performance specifically in the first 24 hours after publication — isolating the initial performance window from the video's longer-term trend. This is useful for diagnosing whether early CTR (which is often inflated by loyal subscribers) differs significantly from later broader audience performance.
